The past quarter once again confirmed the downward trend in tablet sales. According to research company IDCApple retained its leadership, but experienced a serious drop in sales, as did its main competitors.

In the final fourth quarter of 2014, 76.1 million tablets. This is 2.5 million less than in the same period in 2013, when 78.6 million devices were delivered by manufacturers. In just a year, the market was replenished 229.6 million tablets against 219.9 million in 2013 – the growth rate has seriously decreased.

The ancestor of this category of devices in the face Apple retained its leading position, but deliveries were seriously reduced. In the fourth quarter, the American company shipped 21.4 million iPads compared to 26 million a year earlier. Apple’s market share in the fourth was 28.1%. In total, 63.4 million iPads were shipped in calendar year 2014, which is 27.6% of all devices of this type.

The second place both in the fourth quarter and in 2014 remained with Samsung. The Korean manufacturer shipped 11 million tablets in the last three months of last year and 40.2 million for the full year. Samsung’s market share was 14.5% and 17.5% respectively. At the same time, quarterly deliveries decreased, while annual deliveries increased by 500,000 devices.

The third and fourth positions were Lenovo and ASUS. Moreover, the first one took the third place in terms of deliveries in the last quarter, but lost this position to ASUS at the end of the year. Note that Lenovo was the only manufacturer that showed a significant increase in the supply of tablets last year, although the overall market figures are not so impressive.

The final fifth position in the IDC ranking was taken by Amazon. The Kindle manufacturer has seriously lost ground over the past year. So, in the fourth quarter only 1.7 million devices were shipped against 5.8 million a year earlier. Annual figures are not much more optimistic: 3.3 million versus 9.8 million. At this rate, Amazon may soon lose the fifth position under the onslaught of Chinese manufacturers. [MacRumors]
