In order to get to know the world of Android better and to look more objectively at the iPhone, I took a national flagship – Xiaomi Mi 9. Didn’t expect anything special but surprised and quite pleased.

In two weeks of active use, I identified 10 interesting features that will be new to iOS users. Here they are.

1. It can be charged with cable from MacBook Pro

It is enough just to rearrange the cable from the laptop to the smartphone

The first discovery was the USB-C standard, which I have long been accustomed to on my 2017 MacBook Pro. On the computer, it was not so easy to come to terms with him, but on a smartphone he is the place.

Imagine you can swap cable from laptop to phone, quickly charge it, and then return it back. It is very comfortable.

Moreover, the Xiaomi Mi 9 battery can charge up to 29 W, so the 61 W MacBook Pro power supply is just right for it.

I’m surprised because I never got a USB-C to Lightning cable for my iPhone Xs Max, so I charge it with a 12W iPad block. The process is going very slowly.

2. You can easily collapse an incoming call on it

This miracle feature on the iPhone has been missing for a very long time

We have been waiting for this feature in iOS 13, but the system is nearing release, but it still does not appear.

When the phone receives an incoming call, it appears as a notification badge at the top of the screen. If you swipe it, then only a small button will remain in the very corner.

Today, voice communication is used much less than other device capabilities, so I consider this decision 100% correct. Looking forward to future versions of iOS.

3. Tethering is much faster and easier

MacBook instantly finds the network created by Xiaomi Mi 9

I have the latest test version of iOS 13 on an iPhone Xs Max, and that might be the issue. But the fact is that the Mac finds my Mi network 10 seconds faster.

In normal operation, this is absolutely unimportant. But I often have to edit my articles right in the car. In such cramped conditions, you want fewer annoying factors.

It is also interesting that the smartphone can distribute Wi-Fi over Wi-Fi. In this case, it acts as a wireless network extender, and I sometimes use it in co-working spaces in a neighboring city.

In one of my favorites, the network does not finish on the balcony-terrace, but I have just the solution to the problem with me.

4. It has a remote control

The infrared port in the smartphone is very handy even in 2019

Real life story. I come to the office in the morning and I can’t turn on the air conditioner. The heat is terrible, and the batteries in the remote control just ran out. There is no time to go for new ones, but it is impossible to breathe – the air is burning directly.

Some kind of notification came on Android, and I saw the “Mi Remote” icon on the home screen. It was only at that moment that I realized that there is an infrared port and the ability to control equipment with it.

In short, I never bought batteries, but the heat no longer bothers me.

By the way, I have an air conditioner of an indistinct Chinese company, which is not in the application list. But it still recognized him.

5. Its display works with Always On technology

I still do not understand why Apple does not use this feature on the OLED screen

The always-on screen is a very handy feature that the iPhone and Apple Watch lack.

When locked, it can display the time, date, day of the week, and battery life.

6. You can already connect external drives to it

I connected the flash drive through the USB-C adapter without any problems.

I have not tested it in combat conditions yet, but with the help of this chip you can connect the most ordinary flash drive with moviesto see a couple of interesting ones on the road.

By the way, in the “Files” on iOS 13, this feature should also appear, but so far only on the iPad Pro with USB-C.

7. The operating system is configured more flexibly

You can arrange the icons on the home screen in any order

There are themes and widgets of any size. Application icons can be placed anywhere on the screen. It is possible to flexibly configure the analogue of the “Control Point”.

I turned Android into an analogue of the current iOS, it’s more familiar, and MIUI contributes to this.

8. Fingerprint scanner under the screen saves

No face recognition, but the scanner is very good

I don’t know why, but the skin on my fingers can be in two states: either super dry or a little wet.

I think because of this, Touch ID on the iPhone did not always work for me before, so I was very happy with the transition to Face ID.

Xiaomi is a different story. The face scanner is here for show, but the fingerprint sensor has no problems with my hands.

Most likely, the fact is that in this case a radio frequency or ultrasonic sensor is used – I see no other explanation.

9. Developers have access to the NFC chip

With it, you can quickly read bank card data

Another useless, but interesting feature is full access to NFC, which iOS developers do not have.

With this sensor here they can even read credit card informationto link them to banking applications or transfer money.

On iPhone, bank cards need to be scanned using the camera. This is also convenient, but usually longer.

10. Xiaomi can charge iPhone

An external battery from it is so-so, but sometimes it saves

Yes, this is a rather useless feature, given the Mi 9 battery capacity of only 3,300 mAh, but sometimes it can help out. For example, this way the headphones can be charged directly via a smartphone, and this is convenient.

You can also recharge the iPhone, but Xiaomi in 95% discharges faster than it, although this is an additional device, and not the main one.

Instead of a conclusion: is Xiaomi really better than the iPhone

Devices in different price ranges and very different levels of elaboration

Of course not.

Xiaomi Mi 9 costs about three times cheaper than the iPhone Xs Max – about 25 thousand rubles. It is expected to fall short in terms of absolutely everything – from the development of the operating system to the build quality.

Yes, it has a flagship processor, but that doesn’t make it a premium device. Honestly, I suffered a lot to get a sane case and a protective glass on the screen for it.

But I did not set myself the goal of replacing one with the other. No, I needed an additional screen with a set of software, SIM cards and more. I sold my second iPhone not so long ago, and so far I like Android as an accessory to the main smartphone.

Buy Xiaomi Mi 9 for 26,990 rubles.
