In the recently released iOS 15, there are many chips and useful innovations. One of the most notable innovations was the new mode Focusing. It can be considered as such “Do not disturb” at maximum.

For a long time, the Cupertino players have not introduced such complex and complex chips, the configuration and analysis of which should be given special attention.

Now let’s figure out what Focusing different from mode Do not disturbhow the new iOS 15 option is configured and how it can be useful.

How Focus is different from Do Not Disturb

one. The ability to turn off the mode if the iPhone is unlocked is gone. Previously, the corresponding option was on the path Settings – Do not disturb – While iPhone is locked.

After turning it on, the user could independently interrupt the Do not disturb mode if he unlocked the device. So it was possible to deliberately turn on the device to receive notifications while the mode was running, but now there is no such possibility in iOS. You need to either set up automation or focusing in a tricky way, or turn off the mode when it is not needed manually.

This can cause problems for users who are used to receiving notifications only when actively using the device, blocking all messages when the iPhone is locked.

Perhaps this is the only inconvenience that some users may encounter after updating to iOS 15 or iPadOS 15.

2. The mode itself Do not disturb has become one of the custom profiles that together make up a new section of options called Focusing.

Initially, iOS will offer several ready-made presets for different use cases. One of the profiles at the first start will conduct a brief acquaintance with the chip and allow you to set up a new preset.

3. All mode profiles are customizable. You can delete them (except profile Do not disturb) and create the required number of your profiles. The maximum number of possible profiles is ten.

four. Changed mode activation button in control point. It has become twice as large and has two active zones. The circle with the focus mode icon toggles it on or off, while the rest of the key opens a list of available modes.

In this menu, you can select a suitable profile, and if you click on the button with three dots, you can activate the profile for a certain time or go to its settings.

5. There was an indication of the active focus mode on the lock screen with the ability to quickly switch or adjust the profile.

How to set up your profile for Focus Mode

To create your own profile go to Settings – Focus and click the “+” in the upper right corner of the screen. You can find a similar button in control pointif you press the key Do not disturb.

Firstlyyou need to specify the main purpose of the profile. The icon of the mode and additional options for its activation will depend on this.

So profile Behind the wheel can be activated when connected to the car radio or head unit. Sports profile may turn on depending on the start of a particular workout. Game Mode can be configured to work when a gamepad is connected, and Night Mode can be configured to work together with the Sleep mode chip.

Otherwise, the profiles do not differ from each other and can be configured as you like.

Secondlyfollows specify a list of contactsthat can bypass this focus profile. For example, you can specify the contacts of important colleagues and superiors if you are setting up a profile for protection from notifications at home. So you can not miss business correspondence or work instructions.

Here you can also configure the operation of the mode in relation to other contacts. As in previous versions of iOS, you can allow calls to all contacts, only a specific group, or completely block notifications for the duration of the profile activation.

Please note that when you add a contact to the allowed list, it will be able to bypass the focus mode in all available applications. It will receive calls, SMS, messages in instant messengers and e-mail. All means of communication that are added to the contact card of this person will be active while the mode is running.

Thirdlyneed specify applications, which will display custom notifications. Here you can add an email client, messenger, banking application or something else.

Remember that when adding instant messengers or social network clients to this list, it does not make sense to limit the list of contacts, because all messenger users will bypass the focus mode.

What options do profiles have?

In addition to the already mentioned features of certain profiles (Behind the wheel, Sport, Dream, video games) all profiles have the same list of parameters.

▣ Section People allows you to change the list of users bypassing focus mode if you forgot to add someone during the initial setup.

▣ Section Applications, allows you to change the list of programs and games with notifications while the mode is running. The setup is similar to adding apps for the first time when setting up a profile.

▣ In the menu Focus Status there is an important switch Share focus status. When it is activated and the focus mode is turned on, the system will share your status in all available instant messengers and applications. Initially, the chip works in face time and iMessagebut third-party developers can already use it.

So the user who wants to send you a message will see a message about activating the focus mode. He will not know the name of the mode and how it works, but he will understand that the message will not be received instantly.

▣ In the section Home screen two options can be configured. The first hides notification badges from app icons. A very useful feature for those who are constantly distracted by icons with red circles and spend precious time on this.

The second option allows you to customize how home screens are displayed when the selected focus profile is enabled. Perhaps this is the most interesting and underestimated feature of focusing. You can select only screens with icons of the necessary applications, and hide the rest for the duration of the mode.

You can even create a separate screen with certain icons and turn it on only for the duration of the corresponding profile. For the full-fledged work of the chip, you will need duplication of application icons in iOS 15, which was initially perceived as a bug in the first beta versions.

▣ Menu item Lock screen allows you to turn on the dimming of the “loxscreen” and the muting of banners on it. The options are useful for completely hiding distracting notifications if you like to check the time on your smartphone and can be distracted by missed messages.

▣ When setting up your own profile, a section will be available Title and designin which you can select an icon, main color and name for the profile.

▣ Item Auto power on is the most interesting for setting up and running different profiles. Here you can specify any condition for activating the focus mode.

The trigger can be a certain day and/or time of day, geolocation and any application. As you understand, a profile can be activated by time, place or at the time of launching certain programs.

The last item on the list is Smart activation. This is a smart iOS algorithm that will monitor the conditions for manually enabling a profile and, based on the patterns found, will be able to set up automation to enable it.

Here is such a solid list of parameters that each focusing profile has.

Two Important Features of Focus in iOS 15

In addition to the features and parameters already mentioned, two options should be highlighted separately.

Accounting on all devices. There is such a switch at the very bottom of the list of profiles along the path Settings – Focus.

With it, you can enable the mode on all devices with your Apple ID account. Of course, gadgets must be updated to iOS 15, iPadOS 15 and macOS Montereywhich will be released later this fall.

So when you manually or automatically turn on the focus mode on one gadget, it will immediately turn on on all the others. This is just a mega-convenient feature that previously prevented some users from turning on calls and messages on other gadgets.

Now you can safely activate the reception of calls from iPhone on iPad or Mac and not worry that the call will ring on all devices in the house when the iPhone is put into the mode Do not disturb.

To activate the parameter, turn on the switch On all devices on each of their gadgets.

► The second important feature – Urgent notifications. You can find it in the settings for allowed applications for each of the focus profiles. In addition, the parameter must be activated in the section with notification settings for a specific application.

So far, only some standard utilities have this option (House, iMessage, face time), but may be added to third-party programs in the future.

The logic of the chip is as follows. If you allow urgent notifications in the focus profile settings and activate the switch in the application’s notification settings, then such a program will be able to bypass the mode Do not disturb and deliver important messages.

Which messages will be considered important is decided by the developer of each specific utility. Apple has given developers complete freedom to classify notifications in their apps. Cupertino asked not to abuse this opportunity and not to give high priority to frankly unimportant or promotional notifications.

In any case, the user will be able to disable them in the settings, but the trust in the developer will be lost.

Cupertino offers four levels of notification priority: passive, active, time-sensitive and critical.

Passive Notifications are the lowest priority and should not disturb the user, distracting from other things. This type of notification includes, for example, a proposal to evaluate the program.

Active Notifications are the majority of notifications that are delivered by all applications now. They cannot bypass focus modes (unless app or contact permission is set).

Time sensitive notifications is a high priority message category. It is up to every application developer to grant these rights to a message, but this should be done very carefully. For example, messages about the need to take a medicine, about an alarm in a smart home system, or about unauthorized access to a user’s bank account can become time-sensitive.

Such messages will be able to bypass focus modes (when the above setting is enabled).

Critical notifications are the highest priority. They will bypass all focus modes (even with the setting turned off) and make their way through the iPhone’s silent mode. It will be possible to add this type of notification to the application only in agreement with Apple.

A critical type of notification can be received, for example, by alert systems for emergency situations or unforeseen weather events.

Who will benefit from the new Focus mode

Many users will continue to use focusing as the first profile Do not disturb and will not bother with the settings. However, we strongly recommend that you understand how this feature works and find some useful applications for yourself.

So you can set different profiles for different situations.

One profile can be night with complete blocking of calls and notifications. This mode will almost completely copy the operation of the Do not disturb mode from previous versions of iOS.

The second profile will come in handy for study, lectures or workshops. In this mode, you can add several family contacts or priority colleagues.

The third profile will come in handy for sports. You can ignore all but the most important notifications to concentrate on your workout.

The fourth profile can be playful. So notifications, banners or incoming calls will not interrupt online battles.

In addition to typical focusing applications, several non-standard solutions can be found. The mode is suitable for full concentration on some process, for the time of brainstorming or solving complex problems.

Focusing can shield from notifications for lunch or rest after heavy exertion. The chip may not block messages at all, but simply switch different desktops with icons on a schedule.

In any case, we recommend that you take a look at the settings of the new chip and try to find interesting applications.
