A couple of days ago, Apple allowed journalists and video bloggers to publish their impressions of getting to know the iPhone Xr. Especially for this, the company invited representatives of leading IT publications to a small showroom, where they carefully placed the iPhone Xr in all the colors of the rainbow.
On the same day, pre-orders for the “affordable” iPhone Xr also opened, and today Apple gave the go-ahead to publish full-fledged reviews on the new product.
Let’s figure out what pleased the iPhone Xr journalists, and what did not suit. Below we publish only key excerpts from the reviews with links to the source.
1. The Verge

It’s worth starting with the fact that The Verge journalists called the review very optimistic: “Better than just good.” And this is about the iPhone Xr. The main difference between the more expensive iPhone Xs and XR edition calls display.
If the screen is your top priority and you want a “natural black” OLED, get ready to pay $250 extra and you’ll get it.
The rest of the Xr is: the same A12 Bionic processor, support for Smart HDR, gesture control similar to the Xs and Xs Max, support for wireless charging. Moreover, XR will support work with two SIM-cards (alas, not in Russia).
Now about the differences. The iPhone Xr has only one main camera – there is no telephoto sensor in the model. The more affordable iPhone is noticeably larger than the Xs. Finally, instead of steel frame XR made of aluminium. Well, the main bonus is six different body colors at once.
What we liked: The IPS-display differs from the iPhones of previous generations for the better. Apple cleverly disguised the backlight of the display by applying a small tint layer on the glass of the device – a tribute to design and attention to detail is still in the company’s blood. The display is protected by the same glass as the iPhone Xs.
Size XR ideally located between the entire line of Apple smartphones. Just between the dimensions of the iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus (and devices related to these models).
In most scenarios, the iPhone Xr’s camera is on par with the flagship Xs and Xs Max. Sometimes notice the difference in photos taken by Xs and XR, impossible. In addition, the iPhone Xr has a more advanced portrait mode selfie camera.
XR an impressive battery, it is larger than X and Xs. Autonomy is enough for 13 hours of active operation.
What did not like: just huge frames around the perimeter of the display, they can not be unseen. The iPhone Xr does not have 3D Touch, its counterpart is the Haptic Touch vibration feedback, and it will take a little getting used to. The display does not support Dolby Vision and HDR.
Strangely, there are still no original cases for the iPhone Xr. But the protective glass of the back cover in the iPhone Xr is borrowed from the iPhone X, that is, it is clearly inferior to the iPhone Xs and Xs Max in impact resistance.
2. Engadget
Engadget called the iPhone Xr “one of the most exciting smartphones Apple has released in recent memory.” Moreover, launching sales of two flagships, and in a month to release a new, cheaper model with almost the same functions, is extremely atypical for Apple.
And the iPhone Xr turned out to be a good, if not the best offer in terms of price / quality ratio. Given that the iPhone Xs and Xs Max outperform any Android flagship in terms of performance, the XR unlikely to be inferior to top-end iPhones.
Yes, XR 3 GB, not 4 GB of RAM. But at the same time, the iPhone Xr has a lower display resolution, which does not unnecessarily load the processor when rendering the interface.
The iPhone Xr feels like no other iPhone. It is unusual to hold it in your hand. On the other hand, the Xs seems a little small to many, while the iPhone Xs Max does not fit in the palms of people with small hands. And what Apple didn’t really consider was the premium version of the iPhone in the iPhone Xr case. However, things could change next year.
XR LCD display installed. Apple chose this matrix solely for the purpose of reducing costs, but, at the same time, did not save on the touch sensor. It runs at 120 Hz and provides excellent user experience with the interface without any delay (not to be confused with the refresh rate of the display).
In conclusion, I would like to say that the iPhone Xr is a great smartphone that is worth every dollar spent. It is good in everything: from the camera to the body and display.
3. CNBC
Advantages of the iPhone Xr. First, this smartphone feels like a gadget that clearly costs more than $750. There is a whole palette of shades to choose from, premium glass on the back of the case and aluminum frames look good. Personally, it seems to me that the differences between the iPhone Xs Max and XR not so much, considering the impressive price difference and very similar hardware.
Face ID works just as well as the iPhone Xs, cameras are great; frontalka, so generally identical. There is support for wireless charging, good water resistance, autonomy.
Disadvantages of the iPhone Xr. Apple has seriously cut the functionality of the main camera XR. Specifically in portrait mode. This model does not know how to take photos with background blur if the sensor does not detect a person’s face in the frame.
In perspective, unlike the iPhone Xs, XR will not receive support for new bands of cellular networks that are planned to be launched in the US. However, this is hardly relevant for Russia.
And again, the overly slow power supply that Apple cheekily bundles with the new smartphone is annoying. A little more upset increased, in comparison with the iPhone Xs, the thickness of the case. But for many, it will be an advantage on the contrary.
