Enable or disable VSync: what does this graphical option do

VSync (vertical sync) is a graphics card or monitor setting that can limit frame rates. This adjusts the vertical sync. Thus, the image is reproduced without any breaks, the so-called Tearings. In almost all games, you can turn this feature on or off, usually VSync is enabled by default.

If VSync is enabled, your graphics card will sync with the monitor. Accordingly, FPS is reduced to the refresh rate of your monitor. At 60Hz, your graphics card also switches FPS to a maximum of 60Hz. This avoids graphical errors and makes the image clearer.

However, this option usually requires some computer processing power. For example, if your game runs at 80fps or more without VSync, even though your monitor is only capable of 60fps, you may experience graphical glitches (those Tearings). If you enable VSync, your computer will reduce the FPS to 60 and render all elements of the image on the screen in a timely manner.

Which games should activate VSync

VSync is a significant addition that can make the game look much smoother. This is the main reason why this feature is enabled by default. There are several reasons to activate VSync:

  • If you constantly notice small twitches in the game, try activating VSync. In this way, you avoid the so-called “half frames”, which can cause the image to slow down noticeably.
  • In single player games, you can confidently enable VSync. In atmospheric games, image stuttering can ruin the overall mood and therefore interfere with the perception of the entire gameplay.

Why you should turn off VSync

Although VSync will help stabilize the image and eliminate errors, there are quite a few reasons that speak against activating this feature.

  • If the game performs worse with VSync enabled, it means that your PC performance is not enough for the graphics settings, as the extra frames are saved anyway. In this case, deactivate this option.
  • It’s also worth turning it off if your monitor has low FPS. On devices with refresh rates below 40fps, many games can no longer display smoothly. Therefore, first check the number of Hertz of your monitor.
  • VSync also sometimes leads to signal delay. This can be critical for games where the player’s reaction time is important.
  • If you play multiplayer or online games, you should also opt out of VSync. The so-called input lag (Input-Lag) can cause an insulting defeat.
