Our tips will help automate life and squeeze everything that it is capable of out of technology.
Google Home: Control your TV with your speaker
With your Google Home smart speaker, you can control multiple devices in your home. For example, you can turn the TV on and off with voice commands.
In order for the TV to be able to recognize commands, you will need a Google Chromecast adapter that connects to a free HDMI port. Another condition for controlling a TV through Google Home is support for the HDMI-CEC standard. Most modern models support HDMI-CEC, but this feature must first be enabled in the settings. To achieve the desired response, it is enough to say “OK Google, turn on the TV” or “OK Google, turn off the TV.”
If you’re using multiple TVs with a Chromecast adapter, you can assign names to individual devices. For example, with the command “OK Google, turn on the TV in the bedroom”, launch Google Home to control the desired device. If you use the Google Assistant artificial intelligence system on a smartphone running Android 6.0 or higher, you can also control the TV using your mobile phone: the commands are identical in this case.
EMI sensor: Measurement of electromagnetic radiation
The so-called “EMR” (electromagnetic radiation from devices) can have a negative impact on health. If you want to get information about the radiation intensity in your home, you can use special measuring instruments – for example, the Gigahertz Solutions ME 3851A analyzer (about 28,000 rubles).
More measurement tools are offered by specialized companies. The cost of such a study will be about 10,000 rubles. In all measurements, it should be taken into account that the values of electromagnetic emissions can change over time.
Philips Hue: Resetting the lamp settings using the remote control system or app
If you want to connect your Philips Hue lamp to a new group of devices or other systems, they must be reset. The easiest way to do this is with the Philips Hue gen 2 mobile app for Android and iOS.
In the “Settings” section, select the “My lamps” category. In the “Connect a new lamp” section, find the “Search manually” item. Enter your Hue lamp serial number and click Search. Now the application resets the lamp settings to the original values. Once it lights up, unplug it from the mains before reconfiguring.
You can also perform a factory reset using a compatible remote control system. For example, on Living-Colors systems, hold down the power button and the first Favorites button for five seconds. On the Hue dimmer, hold down the on and off buttons for five seconds. Once the lamp lights up for a short time, the reset process is complete.
Android: Auto turn on wireless
With the help of special software, you can automatically turn on your wireless network. First, download the Droid Automation app from the Google Play store and create a new profile. Then open the “Switch” tab and select the appropriate switch. For example, it could be your home NFC network tag; you can also specify the location of your house or apartment. As soon as the GPS locator detects you in this place, the application will automatically turn on.
You also specify what should happen in this case, such as enabling the application to turn on the wireless network. If your smartphone is running Android 8.0 (Oreo), this task does not require an additional application. In the “Settings” section, go to the “Wireless Settings” item and activate the “Automatically turn on the wireless network” function here. Now your smartphone will automatically turn on the wireless network when you come home.
Online purchases: Notification of unsuccessful transaction and refund of the purchase price
When shopping online, force majeure is not uncommon: goods arrive damaged, do not match the order, or are generally lost along the way. Some buyers have also reported that their PayPal account has been misused. In such cases, you have the opportunity to return the purchase price within 180 days from the date of payment. However, the seller and, if necessary, PayPal will review the transaction before making a full or partial refund.
To get started, sign in to PayPal using your email address. The Actions menu item lists your previous purchases. There, select the transaction you want to dispute. On the next page you will find the details of the deal. Scroll down and click on Troubleshooting. Now select Account Unauthorized Access if you didn’t make the payment, or Buyer Protection if you didn’t receive the item.
On the next page, PayPal asks for more information regarding the refund request, which you confirm by clicking the “Next” button. The seller has 20 days to respond to your claim. If no agreement is reached, create a Buyer Protection claim in the Problem Overview section. PayPal will then refund the purchase price to your account by debiting the seller’s PayPal account. However, according to a Supreme Federal Court ruling released a few weeks ago, the seller has the right to challenge the action.
SD Card app: Assess which programs take up the most space on your phone
The free SD Card utility installed from the Play Market is very simple and intuitive. After installing it on your phone, launch it and select the type of memory to be scanned (internal or additional microSD card). After scanning the folders, you will see an interactive table consisting of the names of the applications and the space they use.
The categories are divided into system programs (operating system and supporting libraries), applications, and multimedia. Each block can be tapped. Moving to the right opens subcategories. It’s easy to see how bloated each of your apps is here. For example, Facebook took over 350 MB in less than a year. Basically, these are cached files of photos, videos, etc.
Clicking on the “Show” icon will open a system window with information about the application. Here it is already advisable to weigh the pros and cons and either clear the cache memory or limit its volume. The latter is relevant for programs focused on social networks: Vk, Messenger, Coub, YouTube, Instagram. Typically, such applications for a year of systematic use increase in size several times. Therefore, the annual cleaning of personal files and cache memory frees up from one to several gigabytes of memory. In the case of instant messengers, it is easier to clean through the settings menu.
