Two or three years ago, a scooter, a scooter or a monowheel, the source of energy for which is electricity, were a curiosity even in the capital. Silently rolling up to passers-by from behind and swiftly disappearing into the distance after a fulfilled request to give way often caused shouts of approval after them. Now an electric toy that can travel 10 or more kilometers on a single charge is no surprise.

The explosive growth in the popularity of electric transport successfully coincided with the expansion of sidewalks and the construction of bike paths in Moscow, and now only a child, seeing a person on a hoverboard, will scream: “Mom, I want the same one!” Everyone else is either indifferent to the issue, or simply buys an electric vehicle.

After all, modern compact electric transport is no longer a toy, but a full-fledged means of transportation: albeit not very fast and not for long distances. Thus, it not only solves the two identified problems, but also brings a lot of pleasure. The author, having got acquainted with electric devices three years ago, has since constantly carried an electric scooter in the trunk – just in case.

Consider the available electric transport of three categories: a toy, a vehicle and a sports equipment.

Gyroscooter

Gyroscooters are similar only externally. They differ greatly in terms of speed, power reserve, and load. Here, for example, is an adult model of the highest category Hoverbot C-3 Premium: it seems like a toy, but if you look closely, it’s not at all.

A power reserve of up to 20 km is enough to get from the metro to the house and back (of course, for this you need to keep an economical speed – it won’t travel that much at full speed). A reinforced frame with a load capacity of up to 150 kg will allow you to go to the store and even bring something from there in two packages. At the same time, it weighs only 11 kilograms – quite a bit even for a woman.

A powerful 500-watt motor accelerates the scooter up to 12 km/h – this is the speed of a rather frisky run. Its full charge takes only 120 minutes, which makes it possible to use the gadget quite intensively. The device is also equipped with a Bluetooth interface and a built-in audio system, with which you can broadcast music from your phone. The setting is made through a special application that allows you to limit the speed of the hoverboard, select the desired acceleration rate and control sensitivity.

Children’s models of electric vehicles are a little simpler. For example, the Hoverbot Fixiboard (manufactured under the Fixies license) can only withstand 60 kg, but it also weighs half as much – only 6 kg. For such models, as a rule, the speed is limited to 10 km / h. In addition, all Hoverbot children’s scooters are sold with roller protection – these are knee pads, handhelds and a helmet.

The Fixiboard battery charges in just an hour, and the 360-watt motor will allow you to drive up to 10 km on a single charge: it is quite possible to go to school.

And yet, all hoverboards have a feature that does not allow them to be used as a full-fledged means of transportation – low longitudinal stability. Any obstacle above 2 cm is insurmountable for them, and an unexpected small threshold can lead to a fall. Therefore, hoverboards are more of a toy, while more serious vehicles have wheels along the axis.

The first electric scooters that appeared in the country were equipped with heavy steel frames and lead-acid batteries. In terms of weight and dimensions, they were more like electric scooters. Now an electric scooter can not even immediately be distinguished from a conventional one.

Here, for example, Hoverbot F-6. Try to understand from the photo where the battery is. If you didn’t know that this small device with a 250-watt motor travels up to 25 km on a single charge and speeds up to 25 km / h, you would guess that the entire energy reserve of the scooter is located in the steering column, where lithium batteries are hidden ?

The scooter is easy to fold, and weighing 6.3 kg it is very easy to carry on the subway or carry over short distances. On the move, the F-6 is a stable vehicle with front wheel traction. It can only be dropped on purpose, and if you have training on it, you can easily overcome small curbs and pits. However, five-inch wheels are more suitable for hard and relatively even surfaces. A full charge of such a device takes four hours.

A more serious device – Hoverbot F-7 – is equipped with the same wheels, but a more powerful motor (300 W) and a more capacious battery, which allows it to go faster and longer – up to 28 km on a single charge. It charges fully in three hours and folds just as easily as the previous model. Although the scooter weighs almost 10 kg, it is still easy to carry. In addition, it is equipped with additional wheels that allow you to roll it when folded.

Electric scooters, in the opinion of the author, who has some experience in operating such devices, represent the “optimum optimum” of electric transport: they are stable, have a decent power reserve, and when discharged, they turn into a regular scooter, so even if you failed to fully charge the device, you you can still get where you need to go.

The low popularity of electric transport among adult working people is associated more with psychology than with physics and technology – it is still unusual for us to see a person in a suit and on a scooter. But everything is changing. Europe has already tasted electric scooters, it’s our turn.

Electric bicycles are electric vehicles with an unlimited range. You will not be left without transport, even if the bike’s charge runs out – you can pedal without electricity. The electric motor and the battery are able, firstly, to help climb the mountain, secondly, to slightly unload tired legs during a long trip, and thirdly, to provide the legs with a good rest right on the way – the electric bike will ride only due to electric traction.

Electric bicycles can be roughly divided into two categories: single-speed folding bikes with a battery, which are the same electric scooters, but with pedals, and full-fledged multi-speed mountain bikes, but with an electric motor. One of them is the CB1-PRO: aluminum frame with SR Suntour suspension fork, familiar Shimano attachments, Tektro disc brakes, 27.5″ wheels, 24 speeds, load capacity up to 100kg, and a 500W motor for speeds up to 25km. /h

The small (really small!) extra weight that you have to carry with you in the form of a battery is more than offset by the additional features of the bike. The manufacturer claims the ability to travel up to 70 km on a single charge, but with bicycles it is still more difficult than with scooters and hoverboards. Here the distance depends entirely on the mode in which you use the bike: are you riding only on electric traction or using electricity in order to make it easier for your legs.

With a weight of 22.5 kg and the dimensions of an ordinary mountain bike, the CB1-PRO will not be easy to carry in the metro, but you won’t need to ride public transport with it – with electric assistance, even an unprepared cyclist will easily cross Moscow from north to south and return back.

If you don’t need extra traction for a long time, but you want to take your wife or child on a bike ride and not suffer because they cannot keep up with your usual pace, put them on the Hoverbot CB1-Pro. Although, then you yourself will have to actively pedal to catch up with the electric bike.

An electric bike can also serve as a regular bike – just pedal!

There remains one more open question. Why did we write about this in December? After all, electric transport, obviously, has a clear seasonality, it is good in summer, not in winter. Firstly, the New Year is coming soon, and in the summer the prices for everything electrical will definitely rise, so this is exactly the case when the cart should be prepared in six months.

Secondly, who said that the same electric scooter can only be ridden in summer? The issue of the convenience of using such devices in winter is reduced to the issue of the availability of bike paths cleared of ice, and in this regard, the capital has made great progress. Very little time will pass, and a man in winter clothes and on two wheels will cease to amaze others like a yeti. It works in Germany, so why shouldn’t we?
