Another Nexus, and two models at once.
Google does not directly compete with Apple in the smartphone market, but it is its Nexus devices that are chosen as the closest alternative to the iPhone in terms of software quality. The Nexus 6 competes with the iPhone 6 Plus, surpassing it in display size, comparable in performance, but lagging behind in terms of camera and some other features (there is no fingerprint scanner, for example). iPhone 6s and 6s Plus will have two rivals at once: 5.2-inch LG Nexus 5X and 5.7 inch Huawei Nexus 6P.
The official announcement of both models is expected tomorrow, September 29, at a special Google event in San Francisco, USA. But almost all information about the flagship, as well as some data about a more compact model, has already been leaked to the Web. Let’s start with the LG Nexus 5X:
The plastic and rather plump device (154x76x10 mm) is equipped with a 5.2-inch IPS display (1920×1080 pixels), a Snapdragon 808 6-core processor, 3 GB of RAM, a 12.3-megapixel main camera with a laser focusing system and a 5-megapixel frontal.
Although it is not a fact that the final specifications will be just that. For example, some sources point to a 2K display (probably a QHD resolution, like in the Nexus 6) and a 13-megapixel Sony IMX278 camera. There were also rumors of 2 GB of RAM and a dual SIM model for select markets.
Be that as it may, the device looks like a kind of average for those who have a lot of 5.7 inches, they don’t like the iPhone and want to always have up-to-date software. An important success factor will be the price of this smartphone. If Google throws in an attraction of unprecedented generosity, as with the Nexus 5 in the past (also manufactured by LG), then the model will clearly be successful. Even against the backdrop of very modest Chinese competitors, like OnePlus Two.
More interesting model Huawei Nexus 6P. Google first attracted this Chinese company as a partner, and the device really looks like a worthy competitor to both Android flagships and the iPhone 6s Plus.
It’s funny that in size it is almost identical to the Apple tablet: 159.4 × 77.8 × 7.3 mm and 178 g versus 158.2 × 77.9 × 7.3 mm and 192 g, respectively. At the same time, the novelty is also made in an all-metal case, but is equipped with a larger 5.7-inch 2K AMOLED display (protected by Gorilla Glass 4) and a more capacious 3450 mAh battery. It may well be that the device will receive a Samsung AMOLED panel of the same class as in the Galaxy Note 4, which was considered the best mobile display on the market before the introduction of the Galaxy Note 5 and S6 Edge Plus. By the way, the increased battery capacity is not a panacea in the case of Android, and as a result, the battery life may be comparable for both competitors. Even despite the rumored power-saving features of Android 6 Marshmallow. It is necessary to test in real conditions, the numbers on the battery do not say anything.
Continuing the analysis of the characteristics, it is worth highlighting the 8-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 810 v2.1 processor (which has no problems with overheating), 3 GB of RAM, a fingerprint sensor on the rear panel, a USB Type-C connector and 32, 64 or 128 GB of internal flash -memory. You should not count on powerful photographic opportunities. For smartphones in the Nexus lineup, photos have always been in last place. Although, suddenly the Chinese will perform a miracle, who knows? The Nexus 6P features a 12.3MP main camera and an 8MP front camera for ultra-clear selfies.
Lastly, pay attention to color options: graphite, silver, white and gold. Although the latter is rumored to only be available in Japan. There is no fashionable pink gold these days, which is not surprising. After all, this is a hardcore smartphone for geeks, and not a phone for delicate girls.
LG Nexus 5X does not cause any special emotions – a strong middling without frills. But Huawei Nexus 6P is good both in terms of technical characteristics and design. Of course, the price of new products is also very interesting, especially against the backdrop of strong but very affordable Chinese competitors, such as the recently announced Meizu Pro 5. I remember that with the Nexus 6 the company did not become modest, setting the price at the level of flagships from world brands ($650-700). Let’s see how she does this time. Thankfully, the wait isn’t long. [Android Police][AndroidPit]
